Mediapro’s journalists support today’s High Court’s ruling to refuse the police access to news rushes shot at Dale Farm in Essex. It follows attempts by the police to order some media outlets covering last year’s Dale Farm evictions, to hand over their film. The police wanted to use the footage from organisations like the BBC and BSkyB to pursue prosecutions.
“Rightly journalists, including some of our team who were covering the story, viewed the police orders as a ‘fishing expedition’ for evidence,” says Mediapro Media Training Manager Justin Cohu. “If journalists were forced to comply they risked being seen as ‘police narks’. It’s not their job to gather evidence for the police.”
The footage was shot during the operation to evict travellers from the site near Basildon in October. It includes scenes of violence as bailiffs dismantled barricades. Below are some of the images captured by our journalists.
